| Lithium was discovered in 1871. It is the 3rd element of the periodic table and the lightest solid element. It was apparently given the name "lithium" from the Greek work lithos, meaning "stone" because it was discovered from a mineral while other common alkali metals were first discovered from plant tissue. |

| It has a density that is only half that of water. Lithium reacts easily in water and does not occur freely in nature due to its activity. Lithium salts are used as mood stabilizing drugs, primarily in the treatment of bipolar disorder, depression, and mania; but also in treating schizophrenia. It is the only antidepressant effective in treating the manic episodes seen in bipolar disorder. |

| Lithium finds uses mainly as its compounds. Major applications include use in pharmaceuticals, in building material industry, in organic synthesis, in batteries, as a catalyst, as corrosion inhibitor and as lubricant to name a few. |
